Geotechnical Services for Renewable Energy Projects
Environmental & Geotechnical Consultancy Services including Ground investigations & Design Works
Ground investigations & Design Works for Renewable Energy Projects
We conduct detailed site investigations and ground investigations to have a clear understanding of the ground conditions of the proposed renewable energy site. We develop safe and cost-effective foundation solutions for wind turbines, wind farms, solar farms, battery energy storage systems, and other renewable energy projects.
Above is and example of a greenfield site in Lancaster where we examined ground conditions for new Feeder Pillars and C Section Piles to support the panels.

Geotechnical Services for Renewable Energy: Renewable Energy Battery Storage Project
Earth Environmental & Geotechnical Scotland Office has been involved in an exciting project in South Ayrshire, providing geotechnical services for a Renewable Energy Battery Storage Project. An International EV fleet and battery storage specialist are constructing three battery storage facilities at Blackhillock, Kilmarnock South and Eccles in Scotland, which will total £750 million of investment.
At Kilmarnock Substation, South Ayrshire, Paul Finnimore and the team at Earth Environmental & Geotechnical’s Scotland Office completed a range of geotechnical services and site investigations as part of the preliminary investigations of the site development.
The sites are set to be the first commercial contracts in the world to use transmission connected batteries to provide short-circuit level and inertia.
“It’s fantastic to be involved in this innovative new project, the shift towards renewable energy means battery storage technologies are important to speeding up the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy. We completed a comprehensive range of site investigation which included machine excavated trial pits, in-situ plate bearing and infiltration tests.”
The team also completed ground investigations using rotary cored boreholes, surveying, plus ground penetrating radar was used to locate buried services.
“ We conducted a series of assessments for the proposed battery storage site including chemical and earthworks testing, plus the cable route to the substation. It’s great to be at the first stages of this project which will improve matching supply and demand of energy”

Geotechnical Services for Renewable Energy – We have recently undertaken several site investigations for new wind farms, solar farms, and battery storage centres across the UK.
This work also includes several very large wind farm projects in Scotland.
Over the last 10 years, we have worked in all regions of the UK providing site investigations, ground investigations, and design works for renewable energy projects working with an extensive range of renewable energy providers. Our services ensure that your renewable energy project is developed on solid foundations with a clear understanding of the ground conditions. Geological and geoenvironmental conditions of the development site can have a significant influence on foundation designs for wind turbines and solar farms. We work with our clients to ensure the correct ground investigation methods are used for each renewable energy project.
Our services include:
- Ecological surveying
- Topographical surveys
- Resistivity surveys
- Thermal conductivity surveys
- Cable percussive drilling
- Dynamic window sampling
- Dynamic cone penetration testing (DCP)
- Trial pitting
- Soil infiltration testing
- Plate bearing tests
- Geotechnical laboratory analysis
- Environmental laboratory analysis
On wind farm projects we also can carry pull out anchor testing.
Over the last 10 years, we have been involved in some innovative projects and developed substantial experience in the renewable sector including wind farms, solar farms, and battery storage centres.
We work closely with our renewable energy clients to develop safe and cost-effective foundation solutions for solar farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and wind turbines, even on difficult ground conditions.

Ground Investigations for Wind farms, Solar farms, Battery Storage Facilities and More…
“It’s fantastic to see just how many renewable energy projects we’ve been involved with over the past year! At Earth Environmental & Geotechnical Ltd, our dedicated teams have partnered on several impactful projects to support sustainable energy generation across the UK.
From extensive ground investigations for wind farms to pull-out tests for solar panel foundations, each project relies on critical geotechnical insights that ensure renewable infrastructures are built on stable, sustainable grounds. Understanding site-specific conditions, such as soil bearing capacity and sub-surface stability, is essential for designing cost-effective, resilient foundations that can withstand varying environmental challenges over time. This work includes everything from phase one desk studies and trial pits to full environmental impact assessments, each stage enhancing project safety and efficiency from the ground up.
For instance, our recent pull-out testing for solar installations has provided invaluable data on anchor stability, optimizing foundations to handle wind and other load factors without over-engineering, reducing costs while improving durability. As the renewable sector grows, these geotechnical insights are more crucial than ever for solar, wind, and emerging battery energy storage projects across the UK.
