A residential developer requested a Coal Mining Risk Assessment to be undertaken as part of a planning application submission, as the land fell within a Coal Authority Development High Risk Area,
The desk based exercise identified potential shallow workings beneath the site despite the clients expectations. The Coal Mining Risk Assessment (CMRA) revealed an absence of proven workings within the area, however locally outcropping coal seams meant that the site could be underlain by probable shallow workings.
All the boreholes proved shallow workings at a depth of 10m, with 1m high interconnected workings.
As a result a programme of drilling and grouting was implemented beneath the new structure. This was undertaken by a reputable contractor working under the supervision of a resident engineer from Earth Environmental & Geotechnical Ltd.
